#modastitchpink 2020 Block Seven -Jersey Girl

Hello Block 7!

How is it going for you? Below is the FREE pattern for you to download.

When I first met this pattern, I was a bit anxious. it has been a while, but the last time I made a Dresden Plate block it came out more wonky than I would’ve liked This one had a good result for me. It was not the perfect result I had imagined, but the block and I discussed it, and we decided we were good to go as is. LOL

I think the pattern is well done and easy to follow. there are a lot of seams so I was careful to keep my seam allowance consistent. (I know, that is ALWAYS important). When making some simpler blocks , I can be more careless (lazy) and still have a good block in the end. I added a bunch of pictures to this post, if that might help anyone to make their block. Now let’s crack on and get to it.

FLIP AND FUSE APPLIQUE

A liitle bit about FLIP AND FUSE APPLIQUE

This is just one way to turn under your center circle edge for applique. You can use ANY method you’d like, or even simpler, you can just sew your circle in place without turning under the edges (raw edge applique).

Begin by:

• placing (1)piece of fabric with (1) fusible interfacing piece that you have traced your circle on 9 circle template provided in pattern).

• The right side of fabric should be touching the glue side of the fusible interfacing template.

• Do not iron at this time.

• Pin the interfacing and fabric together to secure.

• Sew on the traced line of your circle ( the line you traced off the pattern template onto the smooth side of the interfacing) backstitching at the beginning and end of the seam to secure.

• Cut out the circle a 1/4” outside of the stitch line.

• Use a small pair of scissors to carefully cut a small hole in the fusible interfacing. Do not cut through the fabric. Make small clips in the seam allowance. Don’t cut through your stitching.

• Pull the fabric through the hole carefully to bring the fabric right side out. The glue side of fusible interfacing should NOW be visible on the bottom of your circle shape. Use an applique turning tool or similar to smooth the edges of the circle

• I made my center circle larger than the one pattern had . I decided in the end to use a light fabric for my center circle. I liked the ‘donut hole’ look better than a darker center.

• Stitched down here with pink thread and a machine blanket stitch. You can use any stitch , or even stitch yours down by hand.

TODAY’S TIP

It’s not always needed, but If quilt block components aren’t lining up well as you assemble them. Check individual unites and square up, if needed. Pattern instructions give the size that each unit should be. (in this block these pieces were supposed to be 2” x 2” . Mine were a little bit big here and there, so I trimmed them up).

#modastitchpink 2020 Block One Underdog

Hello and welcome to day one of the Stitch Pink Sew along for 2020. Today we have the first block pattern for you, Underdog, and if your using the Stitch Pink Grunge selection, Moda hs included the fabric SKUs on the pattern showing which Stitch Pink Grunge fabric to cut for each block. But what if pink isn't your thing?  Can this be made with something else?  And if so... what? Whatever is you pleasure , that’s what!

These sampler blocks would also make a great scrappy quilt if you’d like to use your stash. Here is Moda’s yardage list of what you’ll need to make this sampler:

Multi-color, single color theme (all blues maybe? I love blue) scraps?  Prints!  They'll all work.  How much yardage will you need?  For a single background, get 3-3/4 to 4 yards, and approx. 6 yards or 24 Fat Quarters for the prints-colors.

TODAY’S TIP

Today’s Tip: clip off triangle points from quarter square triangle units. This will reduce bulk in your seam allowance when stitching your blocks.

HERE is a Note about cutting your outer border fabric now instead of later (OPTIONAL):

You won’t be able to assemble the quilt or add the narrow, outer borders until you get all the blocks done at the end of October, however; you may wish to cut the 2 1/2 strips from your border fabric and your binding fabric at the start. The borders are cut from the BACKGROUND FABRIC yardage. If you are working from a set amount of yardage ( like in our Stitch Pink Grunge kit) you may wish to cut the border strips now and set them aside.

Even though piecing these strips (of White Grunge) will not show in our finished quilt and we don’t mind seams in a narrow Grunge border. WE wanted to give you the option of cutting them now, in case you are using a print, or don’t like seams in your borders. You can click the button below to download the Assembly pages today if you want to cut the borders and/or your binding strips before cutting any of the block pieces.

To start you off - here is a little gift from RockingChairQuilts.com : A Jelly Roll Tip Card and pre-cut yardage chart for you to copy, print out or keep as a handy reference on your smart phone or tablet.

HERE ARE 10 IDEAS FOR JELLY ROLL STRIPS AND SCRAPS:

1. Make strip sets for 9-patch blocks

2. Make strip sets for 4-patch blocks

3. Cut strips 4 1/2" long. Use with 2 1/2" squares (Moda Candy squares work great) to create scrappy Flying Geese blocks.

4. Sew strips together for a scrappy back.

5. Make "framed" 9-patch blocks (1 Jelly Roll strip is enough to frame a 6" finished 9-patch.

6. Make a "coins" quilt using left over Jelly Roll pieces.

7. Make Log Cabin blocks.

8. Make piano key borders for a scrappy quilt.

9. Make kitchen accessories: pot holders, place mats, mug rugs, or coasters.

10. Make scrappy binding by cutting Jelly Roll strips into fourths and then sewing together as many pieces as needed for the length desired.
