Setting Option: Shine On, From Annie St. Cyr

Moda’s own Annie St. Cyr (@littlequiltingcloset) has also created a setting for her Blockheads 6 quilt — a colorful, star-splashed layout called Shine On, designed to let every 9”  block shine.

You can read all about her approach to building a flexible layout as well as finishing instructions in her blog post here:

Setting Option: Pattern Work by Sarah Thomas

Designer and pilot Sarah Thomas of Sariditty created a setting she calls Pattern Work — a playful nod both to the intricate patterns of quilting and to the aviation term used when practicing maneuvers around an airport.

Sarah’s layout uses one version of nearly every Blockheads 6 design (with one duplicated in place of Block 17) and cleverly incorporates her own foundation paper pieced block, High Flight.

The 27" Folk Star block evokes the look of an airport runway, with the surrounding blocks arranged like airplanes flying a left-hand traffic pattern. The 9" and 18" blocks scattered throughout represent landmarks and structures on the ground below.

In this setting, not every block is used at full size — Sarah resized two of the 18" designs (hers and Laura’s) down to 9" to make the composition flow. You can reach out to her for sized down cutting measurements of Blocks 23 and 24!

The result is a layout that blends storytelling, aviation, and quilting artistry in a uniquely Sariditty way.

Want to try it yourself? Sarah is offering her High Flight FPP block pattern and this setting option for free during Blockheads 6. Simply email her directly at SARIDITTY@gmail.com to request them.

Once the sew-along wraps up, the pattern will be available in her Etsy shop, SARIDITTYshop.

EVERYTHING BLOCKHEADS 6 FROM MODA

What exactly IS Moda Blockheads, anyway?

Moda Blockheads is a free quilt-along series from Moda Fabrics that brings together some of your favorite designers to share brand-new quilt block patterns each week. It's a chance to explore different styles and techniques, stretch your creativity, and sew at your own pace—all while connecting with a vibrant community of quilters. Whether you're a seasoned pro or just getting started, Blockheads is all about learning, experimenting, and having fun. Be sure to join the Moda Blockheads Facebook Group, where over 70,000 members share their blocks, tips, and encouragement. You can also follow along and share your progress on social media using the hashtag #ModaBlockheads6.

This blog will ALSO be a place where you can download the free block pattern each week.

When does Blockheads 6 start? How long will it run?

BH6 officially kicks off May 21 with an introduction week. Blocks will be released every Wednesday from May 24 through November 12. We’ll have a big finale on November 19!

Where can I download the patterns?

Here on the RCQ blog by mid day each Wednesday and MODA will publish the pattern PDFs earlier on Wednesday in two places: The Moda blog and the Moda Blockheads Facebook group.

In addition to the block-specific blog posts every week, you can visit the Blockheads 6 Archive page for a complete list of the released block patterns, pattern corrections, and other updates:
https://my.modafabrics.com/inspiration-resources/blockheads-6-archive

Will there be videos this year for each block?

Yes! We will provide a link to the videos as they become available, BUT -Be sure to subscribe to the Moda Fabrics YouTube channel so you don’t miss any of the videos. Moda will have a new video for each block every week that will walk you through the block construction. They will share their sewing tips and tricks, as well as our favorite notions for making our Blockheads blocks.

Find tutorials & designer videos on the Moda YouTube channel!

What are the block sizes?

Unlike last year, BH6 will have different sizes for different blocks (instead of each block in two different sizes). The majority of the blocks will finish at 9”, while there will be a few 18” and even larger blocks!

What about setting options?

There will be at least 5 different settings to choose from! Several of the Blockheads designers will have setting options, and the Moda team is also providing settings.
